Example Projects

Your entry should represent at least 30 hours of work including any writing up time, and it should have had a significant impact external to your usual environment.

Entries could take the form of:

  • A piece of original research
  • A design for a new or improved item
  • Experimentation using new techniques or existing techniques in a novel way
  • Use of media to demonstrate a scientific principle or concept
  • The application of a diagnostic and/or creative approach to a well defined problem or research question
  • A piece of work which explores issues surrounding science or aims to improve the engagement of others with science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

If you believe you have another type of entry which is at the same level as those listed above, but is not specifically mentioned please email us at info@nationalsciencecompetition.org so we can consider it.

Science and Technology categories

The National Science Competition will have two winners, the UK Young Scientist of the Year and the UK Young Technologist of the Year. On the entry form you will be asked to tick a box identifying whether your entry is for Science or Technology.

The Science award will be given across the broad field of sciences (natural, medical and social) and mathematics for projects focused on discovery, exploration and explanation.

The Technology award will be given across the fields of technology and engineering for projects focused on design and making.
